COLOMBO (EconomyNext) - The Sri Lankan government has decided to cancel an 85 million US dollar contract awarded to Access Engineering to repair the runway at the island's international airport at Katunayake, a spokesman said.

The company has no experience to do this work," Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne told a news conference held to announce decisions of the Cabinet of ministers.

"No competitive tender procedure had been followed in the award of this contract."

Ports and Aviation Minister Arjuna Ranatunga had recommended to the Cabinet that the contract be annulled.

By re tendering the Govt can save at least 20% of the initial contract.

Local Engineering companies have to get experience from doing local work. What an excuse to deny a local contractor to get experience doing a local project and to be proud of it.
