Sri Lanka floods hit 150,000; death toll rises to 20

ECONOMYNEXT - Floods and lighting after torrential rain in Sri Lanka had killed 20, with 2 missing while 153,000 people were in distress, though the water level is several rivers was going down, the country's disaster management authorities said.

Nine people have drowned while five had been struck by lightning.

Over 850 military personnel have been helping with relief work.

The Navy had rescued a with a mother and 3 month old baby in Purichchikulam in Puttalam.

The floods had hit 153,712 persons with 36,500 people in distress in Gampaha, 35,000 in Puttalam, 33,000 in Ratnapura, 18,000 in Colombo and 11,000 in Kurunegala.

Over 55,000 people were in shelters.
 
Sri Lanka's Kalu Ganga, Maha Oya, Attanagalu Oya is still at flood level as of May 26, and landslide warnings have been issued in Kegalle, Kaluthara, Ratnapura and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Spill gates of Deduru Oya and Rajanganaya tanks were opened an Unnichchei tank in Baticaloa is at spill level, disaster management authorities said.

Over 4,700 houses have been partially damaged and 105 houses have been fully damaged.
