ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka has suspended a visa on arrival program which was to start on May 01, following Easter Sunday bombings, the ministry of tourism said.

"Although arrangements were in place to issue visa on arrival for citizens of 39 countries we have now decided to hold it for the time being in consideration of the current security situation," Minister of Tourism, John Amaratunga said in a statement.

"Investigations have revealed foreign links to the attacks and we don’t want this facility to be abused."

The free visa program was to be operated from May to October 2019 as a program to boost off-season arrivals to Sri Lanka.

Islamist bombers hit three churches and three hotels killing more than 350 people including 39 foreigners. (Colombo/Apr25/2019-SB)
