ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's electricity grid failed in late afternoon Friday and engineers were working to restore supply, an official of the state-run Ceylon Electricity Board said.
Though the cause was not known a lightning strike is one of the causes being investigated, the official said.
The national grid failed frequently about five years ago, but has since been stable.
When a significant fault occurs, the transmission lines and thermal power plants trips in a cascading fashion. To retain system stability, the power demand and generation to broadly match.
