Sri Lanka industrial activity flat in January, food output down

ECONOMYNEXT - Manufacturing activity in Sri Lanka grew marginally by 0.1 percent in January 2019 compared to a year earlier, the Census and Statistics Department said.

The Index of Industrial Production compiled by the Department of Census Statistics grew to 108.8 points from 108.7 points a year earlier.

An index value over 100 shows a gain compared to the base year of 2015.

Industrial activity slowed down marginally in January compared to the festive month of December, when the index was at 109 points.

Food production, which accounts for over a third of all manufacturing activity, fell 3 percent in January from a year earlier to 104.1 points.

Apparel production, accounting for around 20 percent of the country's manufacturing, grew 4.4 percent to 119.4 index points.

The third largest manufacturer of other non-metallic mineral products, was up 0.9 percent to 116.7 points from a year earlier.

Printing and reproduction of recorded media had the highest gain of 18.6 percent to 123.2 points in January, while chemical products manufacturing had the biggest loss, falling 22.9 percent to 84.8 points. (Colombo/Mar14/2019-SB)
