ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka has jailed a person accused of sexually harassing two British women for five years after getting video evidence on skype, in a landmark case, the tourism office said.

"Last week, the Attorney General’s Department of Sri Lanka permitted Kandy High Courts to proceed with a prosecution on sexual harassment of two female travellers via video conferencing which can be considered as a milestone in the legislation field of Sri Lanka," the tourism office said in a statement.

"The suspect was charged on six counts and evidence from the second victim was obtained through Skype video call and after completing her evidence successfully suspect has pleaded guilty on all charges against him."

The two British girls and their family members were brought to the country by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority to physically indentify the suspect. The tourists had been harassed in Kandy on April 14.

After identification, the suspect was indicted at High Courts Kandy on six counts. However they were unable to stay in the country for the trial until July 25.

The British High Commission had requested that they be allowed to attend the proceedings via video conference.

Kandy High Court Judge Lalith Ekanayake sentenced the perpetrator to 5-years of rigorous imprisonment for each count to be served concurrently. He was also fined 3,000 rupee per count and asked to pay 25,000 rupees to the Victim Protection Authority of Sri Lanka. (Colombo/Aug01/2019)
