Sri Lanka manufacturing index grow 1.1-pct in July

ECONOMYNEXT - Industrial production activities in Sri Lanka during July 2018 grew by 1.1 percent compared to a year earlier, an index compiled by the Census and Statistics Department showed.

The Index of Industrial Production recorded a value of 105.9 in July 2018 from 104.8 a year earlier. A value over 100 shows growth in production compared to the index's base year of 2015.

Food production which contributes 35.2 percent to manufacturing activities, grew 0.1 percent in July  to 103.6 index points from a year earlier.

Apparel production, which forms 19.8 percent of industrial activity, grew 1 percent to 110.5 points from a year earlier.

Manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products, which is 7.8 percent of the manufacturing sector, increased 0.8 percent in July to 111 points from a year earlier.

The fourth largest manufacturing activity, coke and refined petroleum production, with a 7.4 percent share, recorded one of the highest growths of 26.5 percent in July to 105.2 points from a year earlier.

Rubber and plastic product manufacturing, the fifth largest, grew 8.8 percent in July to 117.4 points from a year earlier.

The biggest gainer during the month was printing and reproduction of recorded media, up 37.2 percent to 114.1 points from a year earlier. However, the segment makes up only 1.4 percent of manufacturing activities.

Manufacture of paper products, electrical equipment, furniture and tobacco recorded the largest falls during the month. (Colombo/Sept12/2018)
