ECONOMYNEXT- Crony capitalist oligarchs who have victimised 21 million Sri Lankans with protectionist tariffs are waiting for the return of a dictatorship, Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera said.
"The oligarchs yearn for the return of a dictatorship," he said, delivering the 2019 budget in parliament.
"In fact, some were recently calling for a Hitler," Samaraweera said.
He said crony capitalist oligarchs had become powerful through protectionist tariffs, which have victimised 21 million Sri Lankans with high prices for goods and services.
"Sri Lanka needs a private sector free from the protectionist mind set," Samaraweera said.
He said the oligarchs are of a by-gone era, and the government will support private entrepreneurs who value competing in global markets in a rules-based system.
“By private enterprise, we mean the genuine entrepeneur who uses ingenuity to compete in a fair market – the small and mid size businesses that embody the spirit of Sri Lankan trade and commerce.” (COLOMBO, March 05, 2019-SB)
