Sri Lanka plans PPP hotel schools, foreign investment to boost workers: PM

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka wants to open three new hotel schools as public private partnerships and get foreign investment into a state-run institution to fill a critical worker shortage, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

“My suggestion was to always make the hotel school into a PPP with a foreign organisation which has money to come," he said, at the opening of the Hotel Show Colombo 2018.

"If they want a new area we will award."

The Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hospitality Management, more commonly known as the Ceylon Hotel School, is the only state-owned hospitality training organization, with its main facility in Colombo, and eight provincial schools.

Already, a number of foreign and local investors have opened privately held hotel schools.

The hotel trade has estimated 100,000 new vacancies to be available in the country over the next three years. However, the current hotel schools train only 10,000 workers annually.

Wickremesinghe said that three more hotel schools will be opened outside Colombo in a PPP model.

“The Youth Ministry is prepared to do a PPP with the hotel trade, with us also contributing, for two more hotel schools, one down South and one in Kandy, and if they succeed, we will have one more in the East,” he said.

He said that hoteliers have to invest more to train workers, since the 2022 Football World Cup in Doha and the Expo 2020 in Dubai will attract Sri Lankan hospitality professionals to the Middle Eastern nations.

“You should train more people because I can assure you, there will not be an oversupply,” Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said.

The hotel trade has come up with an action plan to focusing on attracting school leavers to do short courses in updated, common curriculums, followed by internships and flexible career development and training. (COLOMBO, 20 July, 2018)
