ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's cricket team refused to play after coming to the field on third day of the second Test match against West Indies in St. Lucia after umpires demanded a new ball.

Live coverage showed Captain Dinesh Chandimal, on site management in discussions with match referee Javagal Srinath, as the Sri Lanka team stayed at the edge of the boundary line inside the field.

Play resumed after a delay, with the team being encouraged to resume play.

Sri Lanka's sports minister is meeting Sri Lanka Cricket Chief Executive Ashley de Silva to assess the situation, an SLC official said.

At close of play on Friday, umpires had examined the ball and asked to see Sri Lanka player Dhananjaya de Silva's hand.

However there has been no official report for a reason for a new ball, before the expiry of 90 overs as is the usual practice, sources said.
