ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's main political parties are on track to form alliances for upcoming presidential polls with candidates also jostling for nomination, media reports said.
The ruling United National Party of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is forming a National Democratic Front, with existing partners and possible breakaway members from President Maithripala Siriena's Sri Lanka Freedom Party, The Sunday Times newspaper reported.
Sri Lanka Podujana Party of Mahinda Rajapaksa was in talks to set up a Sri Lanka Nidahas Podujana Party with President Sirisena's SLFP.
"The two leaders are billed to meet within the next few days to sort out some contentious issues", Mahinda Amaraweera, General Secretary of President Sirisena's broader United People's Alliance was quoted as saying in the Sunday Island newspaper.
Gothabaya Rajapaksa is to make a public bid for candidacy with a motorcade, though no official candidate has been announced yet.
Within the UNP, there had been a strong push for Sajith Premadasa by senior members at a meeting last week but Prime Minister Wickremesinghe had put off any final decision, reports said. (Colombo/July29/2019)
