ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's power generation expanded 9.6 percent to 3,838 GigaWatt hours (millions of units) in the first quarter of 2018, sharply up from 0.7 percent, growth a year earlier, official data shows pointing a pick-up in economic activity.

Sri Lanka power generation is usually a reliable guide to economic activity, though gross domestic product estimates themselves may change due to the composition of generation or other factors.

Power generation grew only 3.7 percent in the full year 2017 to 14,671 GWh.

In the month of March power generation expanded 9.6 percent to 1,374 GWh after growing 11 percent in February.

In March, hydro power generation by the Ceylon Electricity Board rose to 208 GWh from 118 GWh last years. Fuel oil generation rose to 258GWh from 199.

Coal power rose 6 percent to 590GWh and private sector generation fell 44 percent to 318GWh. (Colombo/July18/2018)
