ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena said he has signed the death warrants of four convicted drug dealers but refused to say when they will be hanged, amid opposition to his revival of the death penalty.

Sirisena told a meeting of the heads of media institutions that neither the condemned men nor their families had yet been told of his decision to sign their death warrants.

He refused to say when the imprisoned drug dealers would be executed.

President Sirisena side-stepped a question on whether Sri Lanka had a hangman to carry out the death penalty, saying it was up to prison authorities to appoint one.

Sri Lanka had been without a hangman for decades, and does not carry out executions.

However authorities had advertised for a hangman after President Sirisena said he will revive the death penalty for drug dealers.

There has been local and international condemnation of Sirisena’s plans to revive the death penalty. (COLOMBO, 26 June, 2019)
