ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s police Criminal Investigations Department has been asked to probe a steam-engined luxury train owned by Government Railway but operated by a private travel firm that has caused losses to the State.

Government Spokesman Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said the operation of carriages and special trains under the Viceroy – 2 service with private sector participation had caused  financial loss to the Railways Department.

The loss was revealed in an investigation by the Internal Transport Ministry, he said.

The train is owned by Sri Lanka Railway and managed by JF Tours, a private travel firm.

The ‘Viceroy Special’ train is pulled by a colonial-era 75-year-old steam engine, the only steam engine still in operation in the island, and has two air-conditioned observation saloons with 64 reclining seats and individual adjustable tables and a restaurant car.  (Colombo/August 9 2015)
