ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's vote shows that the ruling coalition has not implemented promises of good governance as expected by the electorate in 2015 and the government has to make reforms, Megapolis and Western Development Minister Champika Ranawaka said.

"A democratic, accountable government should always receive the response from the people," he said in a statement, after Sri Lanka Podujana Party, a proxy of ex-President Mahinda Rajapaksa swept local bodies in a landslide.

"As a result the policy and structural changes asked by the people should be carried out."

Despite mistakes many people have placed their faith on the government, he said.

A breakaway faction of President Maithripala Sirisena has called upon the coalition to step down after the drubbing received at the polls. (Colombo/Feb11/2018)
