CRUISING:  Cruise line Dawn Princes on calling at Colombo

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's Colombo port will build a dedicated cruise terminal aiming to be the largest cruise port in the region, a plan to make the capital into 'Megapolis' of nine million people said.

An existing bulk cargo terminal will be extended and made into a 'cruise centre', the megapolis structure plan developed with help from Surbana Jurong, a Singapore urban planning specialist said.

"..[C]ruise activities are expected to increase with the economic growth in South Asia and Colombo could position itself as the largest Cruise Centre in the region considering the surrounding international tourism destination within Sri Lanka as well as in the Indian Ocean," the masterplan said.

"This Cruise Centre should be connected directly to the City to add vibrancy to the Fort, the Pettah areas and the new development along Beira Lake."

Sri Lanka has been drawing more cruise calls after end of a 30-year war.

Lines such as Hapag-Lloyd have already started using Sri Lanka as a 'turnaround port' where passengers ending cruise dis-embark and a new complement are flown in.

Dubai and Singapore were earlier used for such activities.
