Sri Lanka seeks stronger economic links, religious tourism with Thailand on PM visit

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka and Thailand has inked a memorandum of on strategic economic partnership, with Thailand during a visit of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to the island, while a talks were also held on joint religious tourism.

The Thai Prime Minister met President Maithripala Sirisena.

"During this meeting, attention was drawn to implement a joint tourism promotion programme to take the Buddhist heritage of both the countries to the world," a statement from the President's office said.

Both Sri Lanka and Thailand have an Indianized culture with a Hindu-Bhuddist heritage and had been part of extensive Indian colonial empires.

A Memorandum of Understanding on Strategic Economic Partnership was signed by Sri Lanka's Minister for International Trade Malik Samarawickrama and Thailand’s Deputy Minister of Trade.

President Sirisena appreciated the progress made by Thailand in the agricultural and technical sectors and requested to provide assistance to develop these sectors in Sri Lanka.

General Prayut Chan-o-cha had agreed to take action in this area.

Thailand has an advanced agriculture and food processing industry. (Colombo/July12/2018)
