Sri Lanka speaker asks security for Wickremesinghe amid storming threats

ECONOMYENXT - Speaker of Sri Lanka's Parliament Karu Jayasuriya has asked security of United National Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to be maintained, amid threats to storm his official residence.
President Maithripala Sirisena had said Wickremesinghe was sacked after appointing Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister, but Wickremesinghe had said he cannot be sacked under the constitution and he has the majority in parliament.
Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera had said Wickremesighe's security had been cut.
Jayasuriya writing to President Maithripala Sirisena had said that he had received a request for privileges of Wickremesinghe to be maintained, until Parliament decides who has a majority.
The United National Party of Wickremesinghe had asked for priviledges including security to be maintained.
"I see this as a reasonable request," the speaker wrote in Sinhalese language. "This is more important in the context of threats by several individual including through media."
Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa who is loyal to Rajapaksa has given Wickremesinghe an ultimatum to move out his official residence Temple Trees by 8.00 am Sunday or else.
