Sri Lanka speaker informs President no-confidence has passed

ECONOMYNEXT  - Sri Lanka's Speaker of Parliament has informed President Maithripala Sirisena that an amended no-confidence motion against Mahinda Rajapaksa has passed, amid a worsening political crisis in the country.

The Speaker in a press statement said, on November 16, a motion proposed by legislator Anura Kumara Dissanayake and seconded by Vijitha Herath has been presented to parliament and was passed on the same day with a voice vote.

The no confidence motion said the house accepted that a statement made by the speaker on November 15, that the cabinet stood dissolved as per the 48 (2) of the constitution, following a no confidence motion passed on November 14.

The house proposes that as per Article 48 (2), the House had no confidence in Mahinda Rajapaksa or the government from October 26.

Meanwhile, reports quoted legislator Mahinda Yapa Abeywardne as saying that President Sirisena had did not accept the latest no-confidence motion. (Colombo/Nov16/2018).
