ECONOMYNEXT -  A Sri Lankan parliamentarian has called for a probe into how land owned by the los-making state railway was seized by local government politicians  and illegally rented out.

Ananda Aluthgamage, parliamentarian for Nawalapitiya, an important railway junction in the central hills, said the railway department could easily be turned profitable if its valuable land holdings were used commercially.

Speaking in parliament on the budget debate on transport, he said local government politicians had illegally occupied railway department land under the former Rajapaksa regime.

They had built buildings and rented them out, Aluthgamage told parliament.

The railway department has extensive landholdings in Nawalapitiya where it has a repair depot.
