ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka has decided to build a reservoir in Heda Oya in the Eastern district of Ampara, which will cost Rs11 billion ($75 million), a minister said.
Information Minsiter Gayantha Karunathilaka said the reservoir would prevent flooding during the main Maha cultivation season and provide water during the leaner Yala season.
The reservoir would provide water to the existing 6,500 acres of cultivated land and irrigate 5,300 hectares of additional land.
In addition, it will provide water in the dry season for lands on the banks of Heda Oya, Wila Oy and Karanda Oya valleys.
It will also supply drinking water to the Pothuvil, Lahugalla, Siyambalanduwa and Panama areas. (Colombo/May04/2016 - $1=Rs160)
