COLOMBO (EconomyNext) - Sri Lanka will double the passenger capacity at the main international airport to 15 million passengers a year by 2020 with Japanese finance, Minister Rajitha Senaratne said.

Sri Lanka will borrow 45.42 billion Yen (48.9 billion rupees) from the Japan International Co-operation Agency for the project Senaratne said.

Sri Lanka planned to raise the capacity of the airport to 15 million passenger a year by 2020 from the current 7.4 million.

Cabinet had approved a proposal by the Policy Planning Ministry to enter into an agreement with Japan over the project.

Sri Lanka has seen a surge of tourist arrivals after the end of a civil war in 2009 and the country has also allowed more airlines to fly into the country.

Business and transit passengers are also rising.
