ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka will import bristle fibre for the production of brushes and other fibre based products for export, amid a collapse in domestic coconut production due to drought.

The cabinet of minister had approved a proposal by Plantations Minister Navin Dissanayake to allow the import of bristle fibre under strict quarantine for producers of export brands.

The bristle fibre is expected to be imported form India.

Sri Lanka has been exporting between 8,000 to 15,000 coconut fibre through various products ranging from brushes to mats.

Industry analysts say if Sri Lanka cannot supply the products steadily to their buyers they will shift to new buyers and it will not be possible to win them back.

Countries in East Asia and industrialized countries have become global production hubs because they are not limited to domestic raw materials. (Colombo/Jan21/2018)
