ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s government is to set up a temperature controlled storage facility at Dambulla, a key farming centre in the north-central region, to store farm produce and reduce post-harvest losses, a spokesman said.
The cold storage unit is to be set up with Indian support, according to a joint proposal by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as the Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs and Patali Champika Ranawaka, Minister of Megapolis and Western Development.
The Cabinet of Ministers this week approved the proposal, the spokesman said.
Post harvest losses of fruits and vegetables in Sri Lanka are estimated as high as 40 percent because of the lack of proper storage and transportation facilities and flawed packaging.
