Sri Lanka tourist arrivals up 11.6 percent in April

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's tourist arrivals rose 11.6 percent from a year earlier to 136,367 in April 2016, with India and China dominating, official data show.

Total arrivals for the first four months of 2016 are up 20 percent to 721,185.

Visitors from India increased 12.3 percent to 25,890 in April. Maldivian arrivals rose 14.5 percent to 6,706, while those from Pakistan dropped 18 percent to 2,260. Visitors from Bangladesh grew 51 percent to 1,258, taking total South Asian visitors to 37,312 (up 13.4 percent).

Chinese tourists rose 37.6 percent to 18,972. Visitors from Japan increased 25 percent to 3,172 and Malaysia was up 8 percent to 1,509, but Indonesian tourists fell 25 percent to 1,581.

Western European arrivals were up 12.2 percent to 39,243, with UK arrivals up 6.9 percent to 12,006.

German visitors rose 25.6 percent, French visitors up 17 percent to 7,518 and Dutch visitors grew 41 percent to 2,496.
