ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lankan Minister  of Transport and Civil Aviation Arjuna Ranatunga said new measures were being introduced at the main international airport to reduce delays in clearing immigration and customs.

Delays were caused by increased tourist arrivals and bunching of flights during certain times of the day at the airport in Katunayake, north of Colombo, he said in a statement.

“Most of the delays are in clearing immigration,” he said. “Sometimes, 2 – 3,000 passengers disembark at the airport within just one hour.”

The ministry was working on short term and long term measures to reduce congestion, Ranatunga said after a meeting with airport officials.

Among measures to be introduced in the short term would be improved signage and the deployment of more airport staff to better to guide passengers, he said.

Definite need to increase the pay for Airport Staff since the make the first impression of Sri Lanka and are the Sri Lanka Brand Ambassadors.
At a minimum they should be provided with specially designed representing culture of Sri Lanka. They should appear welcoming, smartly dressed, from Porters , Security Staff, Customs Officers , Duty Free Staff must be trained to interact properly with passengers and tourists.
The guides should be able to speak multiple language. This is more important than spending millions on buildings and equipment.I invite the new Minister to take clues from Singapore and Dubai.

Worst airport ever. Utterly disorganized and the staff truly unprofessional. It's like cattle shed.
