EconomyNext - Hotel operators in Sri Lanka have congratulated President Maithripala Sirisena on his victory in the January 8 presidential poll, saying they were pleased it was not accompanied by the violence which usually mars elections in the island.
Winter months in the northern hemisphere are usually the main tourist season for the island and the hotel industry had earlier expressed fears polls violence could deter foreign visitors, a major source of foreign exchange.
The Hotels Association of Sri Lanka (THASL) said in a statement it is "pleased to note that the polling in the presidential election was concluded in a relatively peaceful manner, conducive to strengthening the democratic process."
The THASL noted the commitment of the President to establish good governance, saying it looks forward to the continued growth of tourism as a major contributor to economic growth.
