Top monk asks Sri Lanka’s ex-defence chief to return as ‘Hitler’

ECONOMYNEXT – A top Buddhist monk has asked Sri Lanka’s former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to become another “ Hitler” who is known to have killed up to six million Jews in the Holocaust.

A chief priest of the Asgiriya chapter, Venduruwe Upali, blessed Rajapaksa on his 69th birthday Wednesday by encouraging him to return to power and “rebuild the country” even if it means establishing military rule.

The monk, delivering a sermon at the private home of Rajapaksa, prayed that the youngest among the Rajapaksa siblings should be the next leader of Sri Lanka as the country needed a “Sinhala Buddhist leader.”

"As the clergy, we feel the country needs a religious leader… Some people have described you as a Hitler,” the venerable monk said referring to Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. “Be a Hitler. Go with the military and take the leadership of this country.”

The monk claimed that crime had increased in the country and he felt Sri Lanka needed a new leadership of a Sinhala-Buddhist individual. He was happy that Gotabhaya has thrown himself into contention to be the next president of Sri Lanka.

"With the blessings of Mahinda Rajapaksa, people aspire to have Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as a presidential candidate and lead this country,” the monk said in the presence of Basil and Chamal – both brothers who are also regarded as presidential hopefuls.

Gotabhaya’s birthday alms giving was attended by a large number of opposition MP’s including several high profile parliamentarians who defected from President Sirisena’s faction of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) recently.

Venerable Upali, who is a number two in the Buddhist hierarchy in the Asgiriya chapter, made it plain that he preferred Gotabhaya to any other Rajapaksa sibling.

His reputation notwithstanding as the architect of the notorious “white van” kidnappings, the monk felt that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa would be a “religious leader, a Buddhist leader and a Sinhala leader.”

Political observers have said Mahinda Rajapaksa’s 2015 defeat was partly due to Gotabhaya’s attempt to project a strong nationalist image and his dalliance with the extremist Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) which was accused of instigating hate attacks against minority Muslims.

Gotabhaya and his then army chief Sarath Fonseka have blamed each other for the kidnappings and a string of extra judicial killings.

He faces several criminal investigations, but has obtained a Supreme Court order preventing his arrest pending a court hearing in his original petition against possible arrest.

The courts have been putting off the hearing with four judges recusing themselves despite one of them granting the initial order preventing his arrest. (COLOMBO, June 21, 2018)

How did Singapore clean up their dirt heap of social decadence when Lee Kuwan Yew took over the government , to bring it to this admirable disciplined economy.

These are the type of idiots who kept this country rotting for the past 2500 years. Many educated people have left the country. Corrupt are leading the county (blue and green parties).
Buddhism has failed in the country. Monks have preaching racism, and some are involved in corrupt politics.Rational people need to wake up and elect honest, educated politicians to the parliament. There are some already in this government - I don't need to tell who they are.

Vandalized, brutalized and traumatized and now putrefaction of all remaining civilised behavior and established disciplines observed to be in a state of putrefaction. Why are those who are in position and are recognized for their authority and efficiency still showing insufficient concern and action.

The doctrine of fascism - Benito Mussolini
State is not indifferent to religious phenomena in general nor does it maintain an attitude of indifference to Roman Catholicism, the special, positive religion of Italians.
The State has not got a theology but it has a moral code. The Fascist State sees in religion one of the deepest of spiritual manifestations and for this reason it not only respects religion but defends and protects it.

What education does this priest have to blast forth on politics?
Did he go to school or university and study political science, or social studies, or principles of good governance or history or geography or science or mathematics or economics, or art, or even English to get a world view outside the frogs well?
Unfortunately little boys as young as 9 or 10 (novices) are handed over to temples by destitute parents when they are too young to decide anything, least of all whether being a priest is what they want to be in life.
Children of rich parents are never handed over like that. Whether to be a priest should be a decision taken in adulthood. The little boys in the temples grow up learning Buddhist texts on the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path and anything else the loku hamuduruwo decides to teach the abitththaya at his leisure. That is all.
Why the press even decides to give publicity for non-Buddhist things the priests utter in this country shows how pathetic is the level of education in the country.
    .
That pathetic state of education and intelligence in this country explains why are people arguing about Hitler and Churchill. This is about the future of Sri Lanka. br.brHitler was just one example of Fascist rule. Political scientist Dr. Lawrence Britt wrote about common factors in Fascism after studying fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia), and Pinochet (Chile), Dr. Britt found they all had many elements in common.
    .
He calls these the identifying characteristics of fascism. Here are some of them to compare with Sri Lanka in the recent past and now:
    .
Powerful and Continuing Nationalism: Fascist regimes make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia.
    .
Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights: Ruler Country. He owns the country. Opponents of the Ruler can be tortured, summarily executed, assassinated, imprisoned with cooked up trials. Courts are a tool of the Ruler.
    .
Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause: The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities, or miscellaneous foreigners
    .
Supremacy of the Military. Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding. Soldiers and military service are glamourized and military personnel, as long as they are loyal to the Ruler personally, are exempt from the laws of the land .
    .
Controlled Mass Media. Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives.
    .
Religion and Government are Intertwined. Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion.
    .
Labour Power is Suppressed. Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed. No street demonstrations whatever Obsession with Crime and Punishment. Under fascist regimes, the police and military are given almost limitless power to enforce laws on a selective basis Rampant Cronyism and Corruption. Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
    .
Fraudulent Elections. Elections in fascist nations are a complete sham and are manipulated. Fascist regimes also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.
    .
Sri Lanka seems to have eliminated a lot of these since 2015, though some aspects still linger. Hopefully things like the RTI and an independent judiciary and police will eliminate the remainder over time, if given the chance and not sabotaged by uneducated priests .

Gothabaya is the most intelligent and sincere leader for the nation. Ltte diaspora, ngo, western Imperialist, ump and tna traitors do not like sri lanka to be develop and progress as a nation. So, they use this mud campaign against mr and gothabaya all the time. They did same before yamapalana election in 2015. You can not deceive people again.

The chief priest has said it very correctly. Another Hitler in the making.

  8. Shan Halamba June 22, 12:54 PM

There is no issue regarding the top monk's statement. It's a Sinhalese idiom Hitler wage meaning be a tough leader. Don't blow it out of proportion. Don't directly translate Sinhalese expressions into English.

This country need an administrator like Hitler. Without strict rules the country can not be corrected.
