ECONOMYNEXT - The Turkish embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka said an attempted coup in their home country was "foiled by the Turkish people".
"The situation which unfolded in Turkey was a coup attempt to overthrow the democratically-elected government," the embassy said in a statement.
"This attempt was foiled by the Turkish people in unity and solidarity. Our President and Government are in charge. Turkish Armed Forces were not involved in the coup attempt in its entirety.
"It was conducted by a clique within the Armed Forces and received a well-deserved response from our nation."
Coup leaders said the attempt was aimed at preserving 'secular' values. The Turkish military has a history of backing secular administration.
President Tayyip Erdogan used social media to call people. The President has earlier come under fire for increasing authoritarian rule and for restricting social media.
