Admiral (Rtd) Prof Jayanath Colombage new Secretary to Foreign Ministry
ECONOMYNEXT – The government has appointed a new Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Relations, as well as several other ministries the government announced.
The announcement said that the current Advisor on External Affairs to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Admiral (Rtd) Jayanath Colambage has been appointed as the new Secretary.
Before the elections, there were rumours in the Foreign Office that Colambage would be appointed to the role.
At the time there were also discussions that the out-going Secretary Ravinatha Aryansinha, a career diplomat with around 35-years of service, may be posted to the prestigious New Delhi mission.
As of this evening, there was no mention of a posting for Aryasinha who turns 60 this year.
Colambage became Navy Commander in 2012. He holds Masters Degrees from Madras University and Kings College London and a PhD from the Kotalawela Defence University.
Colambage’s appointment was one of 25 Permanent Secretarial positions announced today, a tradition that usually follows the day after Cabinet appointments are done.
Another surprise was that of Director-General Health Services Dr Anil Jasinghe who was appointed as Secretary to the Ministry of the Environment.
Jasinghe won kudos for helming Sri Lanka’s anti-COVID operations as Director-General of Health Services. (Colombo, August 13, 2020)
