AG orders police probes to be completed within 3 months
ECONOMYNEXT – The Attorney General has issued instructions to the Police Department to complete investigations into grave crimes and drug offences within three months.
In a letter sent to Inspector General of Police Chandana Wickramaratna the AG Dappula de Livera said delays in investigations is not bringing justice to the people.
The delays mean that witnesses and victims suffer and the accused does not get a fair trial. These results indicate that our justice system is inefficient and not working.
De Livera instructed the police department to produce a report if an investigation takes longer than three months as to why this delay has occurred.
This report should be viewed by the Senior Superintendent and further action taken to promptly complete the investigation.
He said the Government Analyst has indicated that all reports that the Analyst is expected to produce all reports within three months. (Colombo, February 9, 2021)
