Speaker Karu Jayasuriya will summon the Attorney General Dappula de Livera to Parliament next week to discuss several matters including the order to arrest Judge Gihan Pilapitiya.
A statement issued by the Speakers office said that the Constitutional Council had requested Jayasuriya to summon the Attorney General in his capacity as the Chairman of the Council “to inquire into the matter.”
In a meeting held on Friday evening, the Constitutional Council had expressed concern over a number of recent issues which have arisen from directives issued by the AG.
The statement said that the arrest order against Pilapitiya “had come under special scrutiny by the Constitutional Council.”
It added that the CC had discussed that the AG’s directive “is likely to undermine public confidence in the Judiciary.”
They include the prosecution of those responsible for the Easter bombings. The CC has expressed some concern about the arrest of the former Secretary to the Ministry of Defense Hemasiri Fernando and the Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundera.
On Friday Lawyers staged a demonstration in Colombo against the AG’s order to arrest Pilapitiya and several MPs spoke against the directive in Parliament.
Friday’s meeting was attended by the Speaker, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa, former Opposition Leader R Sampanthan, MPs Mahinda Samarasinghe and Thalatha Athukorale and civil society representatives Javid Yusuf and N Selvakumaran
