ECONOMYNEXT – A parliamentarian who publicly endorsed Dhammika Perera’s miracle cure contracting COVID-19 is the only way to shatter the government-backed myths about its supposed healing properties, opposition MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said.
Though he does not wish the disease on anyone, Dissanayake told parliament today, he was happy to see someone who consumed the ayurvedic conction – the so called “Dhammika Peniya” – in full view of the public eventually contract the virus. The National People’s Power MP was referring to State Minister Piyal Nishantha who famously drank the concoction with a number of his colleagues. Nishantha tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week.
In his speech this morning, Dissanayake took the government to task for promoting the supposed cure without testing it first.
“Even you, Mr Speaker, posed for photos looking at the bottle as if one would check for alcohol volume,” the MP told Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
Dissanayake also chastised Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi for endorsing it without directing Medical Research Institute (MRI) to test it.
“What did the health minister do? She drank it. I urge her not to do this again for the sake of her own safety, because if someone brings a vial of poison to her claiming that it’s a COVID cure, she’ll drink it,” he said.
The MP further said that instead of allowing registered ayurvedic doctors to treat select COVID-19 patients, the government has allowed the fiasco around the Dhammika Peniya to escalate to a disaster.
“It was the policy of the government to use western medication to heal COVID-19 patients. How does that not apply to this concoction?” he said.
Nishantha is the fourth member of parliament to test positive for COVID-19 so far after Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Rauff Hakeem and Dayasiri Jayasekara tested previously.
Dhammika Bandara was interviewed by the privately owned Derana last month he claimed anyone who consumes his potion three times would be protected from the virus for life. (Colombo/Jan19/2020)
