Allowance hike for differently abled
The monthly allowance for differently abled persons is to be increased from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 5,000, Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera said today.
The increase will come into effect on 1 July, and is expected to benefits some 72,000 differently abled Sri Lankans.
The allowance hike is part of the Government’s commitment to developing a caring and an inclusive society, as proposed in this year’s Budget, said Samaraweera.
According to a statement issued by the Finance Ministry, Rs. 350 million has been allocated for this purpose.
At present, some 32,000 differently-abled people registered with the government are entitled to the 3,000-rupees allowance, with a further 42,000 people seeking registration.
