Anti-fake news law proposed
The government will propose amendments to existing laws to deal with fake news and hate speech.
The Cabinet of Ministers approved amendments to the penal code and the code of criminal procedure act to take action against the spreading of fake news.
This would be specific to spreading hate speech that threatens National Coexistence and Security.
According to the proposal, a person found guilty under this law could be fined up to Rs. 1 million or will be sentenced a five-year jail term or both.
The proposal also proposed to make amendments to have a prison sentence or a fine penalty for inciting hate speech.
The proposal was presented to Cabinet by the Minister of Public Administration, Disaster Management and Rural Economic Affairs Ranjith Madduma Bandara as the acting Minister of Justice and Prison Reforms.
The proposal was initially made by the Parliamentary Sectoral Oversight committee on Defense.
