Arrest of Patali is not political vendetta-Bandula
Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that the arrest of former minister Patali Champika Ranawaka was not due to a political vendetta.
Speaking at the cabinet briefing held this morning (19 Dec), the minister said that arrest was ordered by the Attorney General as there was sufficient evidence found against the former minister after investigations done by Colombo Crime Division (CCD).
Further, he said that the law will not be enforced or bent to take any kind of political vendetta under the government of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Imprisonment of political leaders and MPs for long periods without granting bail was the policy of the previous government.
He also said that he could not visit the victim of this accident who lives in his electoral division as the parents of the victim had informed him that it would not be helpful.
He added that it was the extent of terror the previous government had during their time
Gunawardena said that there are already various eyewitnesses and evidence to prove how former minister Champika Ranawaka had acted to blame the accident on other parties by unlawfully using the state and police powers.
“The AG has ordered the arrest of the former minister according to a complaint made to Colombo Crime Division saying that the former minister had completely fabricated the evidence blaming another party while misusing state property,” he said
Also, the minister said that although the victim along with his parents came to the last rally at Homagama and pleaded for some justice from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the former minister was not arrested as soon as he came to office.
The arrest was ordered by the AG as there was sufficient evidence to make the arrest after investigating into the incident.
