ECONOMYNEXT – Democratic candidate Joe Biden is counting on mail in ballots in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania to help him as counting got underway in the morning after elections, while President Donald Trump cried fraud outraging critics.
Large numbers of mail-in votes remained to be counted in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania as of Tuesday morning in the US.
US networks have called 238 for Biden and 213 Electoral College votes for Trump from results declared so far. Arizona (08) had been called for Trump by Fox News and Associated Press but CNN and other networks are waiting.
A win in Wisconsin 10 and Michigan 16 would give Biden 268, two short of 270, while Pennysylvania 20 would carry him through.
Hillary Clinton lost the former so-called ‘Blue Wall’ states to Trump in 2016.
Mainly city and suburban voters are expected to vote for Biden which is balanced by more rural voters with less education voting for Trump, a nationalist backed by evangelists.
Earlier in the day Biden called on his supporters to be patient till all votes are counted.
“We feel good about where we are,” he said. “We believe we are on track to win this election.”
As the race tightened Trump cried fraud and said he had won the election.
“We are up BIG, but they are trying to STEAL the Election,” President Trump said in a twitter.com message with a warning from the social network that the tweet may be misleading.
“We will never let them do it. Votes cannot be cast after the Polls are closed!”
Biden fired back that it was not Trumps decision to make.
It's not my place or Donald Trump's place to declare the winner of this election. It's the voters' place.
