Beyond the Recovery: Litro’s Vision for the Future

The Chairman and CEO of Litro Gas Lanka, Muditha Peiris, delves into an introspective analysis of Litro’s strides amidst the challenges of an ongoing recovery. This discourse illuminated not only the substantial progress achieved but also cast a discerning gaze towards the future trajectory of the company within the context of the tripartite pillars of National Transformation – economy, society, and environment.

Positioned as one of Sri Lanka’s most prominent State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) that has managed to flourish financially, Litro’s triumphs find their roots in a dynamic amalgamation of factors. Foremost among these is the organization’s resolute commitment to a people-centric ethos, a philosophy that infuses vitality into its operational fabric. This core tenet has been instrumental in navigating the intricate currents of change, a trait further accentuated by the company’s remarkable adaptability.

Litro was among the initial essential services to achieve optimal operational status during the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic recession. Could you elaborate on how this feat was accomplished, and what benefits have accrued to both your clientele and the country as a result of the measures undertaken?

Recognizing our pivotal role as the nation’s foremost LPG provider, we assumed the responsibility of meticulously managing and enhancing the constrained supply chain. Our unwavering commitment involved ensuring that both export-oriented industries and vital Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) had unimpeded access to the requisite LPG resources, thus safeguarding numerous local enterprises and preserving thousands of jobs. The culmination of these strategic measures is evident in our recent accomplishment of disbursing a substantial sum of Rs. 1.5 billion as dividends to the Treasury. This remarkable feat solidifies our unique standing as the sole State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) to have achieved such a milestone within the past financial year.

How effective have your endeavours in promoting LPG adoption been over the past year? In addition to economic impacts, what sorts of societal advancements have Litro facilitated under your leadership?
As mentioned before, the preservation of jobs during consecutive crises is an accomplishment we reflect upon with immense satisfaction. Furthermore, we have effectively maintained affordable LPG prices in relation to market prices while ensuring widespread availability, particularly within rural areas. The central theme of our campaign revolved around safeguarding mothers from the adverse effects of using unsafe alternatives like firewood and kerosene, highlighting the health benefits of LPG.

In parallel with our educational initiatives, we have expanded our distribution network and bolstered our infrastructure to ensure universal LPG accessibility. Our overarching objective is to establish LPG as the primary cooking fuel in every household. Moving ahead, we are committed to continuing the practice of limiting price fluctuations, ensuring that LPG remains a necessity rather than a luxury, further solidifying its indispensable role.

Can you shed some light on the actions and initiatives undertaken by Litro in the previous year to promote environmental conservation and sustainability, which is the third pillar of your National Transformation agenda?
We have undertaken numerous Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in this realm, including the noteworthy “Heta Surakina Apey Lamai” programme. Notably, “Heta Surakina Apey Lamai” stands as our flagship endeavour, aimed at enhancing LPG penetration through educational interventions that commence at the school level. This initiative empowers students by imparting knowledge about the benefits of LPG, and we incentivize their engagement in this learning process. We firmly believe that young minds possess the potential to drive the propagation of our message and vision – the transition of every household to the safer use of LPG, displacing hazardous alternatives.

Our commitment extends beyond this primary initiative. We have also actively participated in other endeavours such as beach clean-ups and tree planting initiatives, wherein students are actively involved. By engaging the youth, we subscribe to the belief that empowerment through both action and education can mould them into conscientious and responsible citizens, poised to shape a more sustainable future.

What’s next for Litro?
The future for Litro is a dynamic tapestry of growth, innovation, and unwavering dedication to its core values. Positioned as a pioneer in the energy sector, Litro is set to solidify its leadership in advocating clean and sustainable energy solutions.

Anticipated advancements include the embrace of cutting-edge technologies to enhance operational efficiency and customer experiences. Moreover, the company’s resolute commitment to environmental conservation will drive initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions and minimizing ecological impact. With the potential for market expansion, Litro could venture into new territories while upholding its commitment to community engagement through socio-economic empowerment projects and educational initiatives.
