Cabinet to suspend signing of MCC compact
The Cabinet of Ministers has decided to temporarily suspend the signing of the Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact.
Co-Cabinet spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena said a four-member committee will be appointed to study the controversial compact until a final decision is made. The suspension, which effectively nullifies a decision made by the previous Cabinet on 29 October to go ahead with the agreement, will hold until the committee reports its findings to the Cabinet.
The committee will be headed by Colombo University Department of Economics Senior Lecturer Prof Lalithasiri Gunawaruwan and will comprise architect Nalaka Jayaweera, President’s Counsel Nihal Jayawardena and Former Transport Ministry Secretary D S Jayaweera.
