Cabraal must either resign or be fired – UNP
ECONOMYNEXT – The main opposition United National Party (UNP) called for the removal or resignation of former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal from his current post of senior advisor to the prime minister.
UNP MP Ajith P Perera told reporters today that Cabraal should either resign or be sacked from his “key position in the current government” in light of revelations made in the forensic audit report on the alleged central bank bond scam.
Perera was critical of recent remarks made by the former governor challenging the contents of the audit report, particularly in the latter’s capacity as an advisor to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa who is also the minister of finance.
Although there is nothing wrong with Cabraal being critical of the report as a qualified accountant, said the MP, a conflict of interest arises given his new position.
The UNP parliamentarian also questioned the former central bank chief’s rebuttal to the revelations made.
Cabraal has denied wrongdoing and said the forensic audits were biased and politically motivated.
Some forensic reports on pre-2015 reports also referred to losses but not any wrongful acts, Minister Mahindanda Aluthgamage has claimed.
