Cannot lose party identity in efforts to defeat UNP – SLFP

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) cannot lose its identity or alienate its base in its efforts to defeat the ruling United National Party (UNP) by aligning itself with a broader alliance, SLFP Parliamentarian Nimal Siripala de Silva said.

The SLFP is committed to join forces with an anti-UNP coalition, Siripala told journalists in Colombo today (6), as the people expect to see the back of the UNP Government.

“We can’t afford to join an anti-UNP political force at the expense of our party. We cannot sacrifice the SLFP. If we do that, our supporters will curse us. However, we are ready to back any anti-UNP alliance while safeguarding the interests of our supporters, Pradeshiya Sabha members and Provincial Council members,” he said.

Asked whether the party has contemplated at alternative to joining forces with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), a party at the forefront of the anti-UNP drive, SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara said that there can indeed be other alternatives as well.

“We don’t have a major issue with the SLPP. There are only some differences of opinion. We will uphold our identity while partnering with left-wing, progressive parties,” he added.
