Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will receive this year’s Common Ground Award given by the United Kingdom and Search for Common Ground.
The ceremony which will take place tonight at the House of Lords will see Kumaratunga receive her award from the Chair of Common Ground Noor al-Hussein, the dowager Queen of Jordan.
Kumaratunga gets the award “for her outstanding leadership and courage,” a blurb on the Common Ground website said.
“She is the first Sri Lankan leader, in 60 years of Independence to have spoken against extremism and worked towards building understanding and integration between all Sri Lankan communities,” it added.
“It is noteworthy that she continued peace and reconciliation negotiations with the rebels, even after she survived an assassination attempt,” it said.
Past awardees include Muhammad Ali and Jimmy Carter.
