ECONOMYNEXT – China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) has proposed building a dockyard at Hambantota Port on Sri Lanka’s south coast for ship building and repair.
Ports and Shipping Minster Arjuna Ranatunga last week got Cabinet approval from the Cabinet of Ministers to negotiate with CHEC on the dockyard proposal.
Government spokesman Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne told reporters the Cabinet of Ministers had approved a proposal for CHEC to do a feasibility study on the project.
Hambantota Port itself was built by CHEC with a Chinese loan and CHEC is also building the ‘Port City’ by reclaiming the sea off Colombo, a project suspended by the new government.
Ports Ministry officials said the CHEC proposal in Hambantota was to develop, manage and operate a dockyard.
CHEC had requested Sri Lanka grant them an exclusivity period for 12 months to prepare a detailed plan and do a feasibility study on the project, they said.
