China starts building relations with new Sri Lanka administration

COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – China hoped to strengthen relations with Sri Lanka, China’s embassy in Colombo said, following a meeting between newly elected Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe and Beijing’s ambassador to Colombo Wu Jianghao.

Chinese-funded projects had come under fire in the recent past for inflated costs and corruption and they played a key role in ousting the former regime of Mahinda Rajapaksa from office.

China also sided with the previous regime in international fora when it was violating the freedoms of citizens and undermining rule of law at a time when many other countries were asking the administration to change its ways.

There were also reports that China helped the regime in controlling and monitoring citizens’ activities on the net. The new regime lifted net censorship in its first week in office.

Wickramasinghe has also said he would review a 1.5 billion US dollar sea reclamation, which his party said was struck with a World Bank blacklisted Chinese state firm.

The Chinese embassy quoted Wickramasinghe as saying that he hoped to strengthen economic and development ties for mutual benefit.
