The Director of the Criminal Investigation Department Shani Abeysekara has been transferred out of his position the Acting Secretary to the National Police Commission, Nishantha Weerasinghe told RepublicNext.
He said that the Commissioners had yesterday approved the transfer of the Director on the request of the Acting Inspector General of Police Chandana Wickremeratne.
Abeysekera was seen as an upright officer and a top investigator.
Under his watch, several cases involving Military personnel were cleared, including the abduction and disappearance of 11 youths allegedly by Navymen.
His team also investigated and cleared the name of Dr. Shafi Siyabdeen who was accused by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna activists of rendering thousands of Sinhala Buddhist women sterile by damaging their fallopian tubes.
He also investigated the murder of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickremetunge, the attack on Editor Upali Tennekoon, the abduction and disappearance of cartoonist Prageeth Eknaligoda and the abduction and assault on The Nation newspaper’s Deputy Editor Keith Noyahr.
