CID questions Ranil over Easter attacks

ECONOMYNEXT – The Criminal Investigation Department has recorded a statement from UNP Leader, former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, as part of its investigation into the Easter Sunday attacks.

The statement was recorded on Saturday, January 25, the Police Media Spokesman’s office told Economynext.

The Attorney General’s Department has informed the court that as part of its new probe into the six suicide attacks that killed 260 people, the police would be questioning former President Maithripala Sirisena and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya as well.

The seven suicide bombers who struck three churches and three five star hotels in Colombo on Christianity’s holiest day were from an extremist Muslim organisation called National Towheed Jamaat.

The incidents that changed the political trajectory of the country have been probed by a Presidential Commission of Inquiry as well as a Parliamentary Select Committee.

There is another on-going Presidential Commission examining the matter as well.

Sirisena and Wickremesinghe deposed before the Parliamentary Committee.

Inspector-General of Police Pujith Jayasundera and former Secretary to the Ministry of Defense Hemasiri Fernando have been arrested in this connection charged with negligence and are currently in remand. (Colombo Jan29/2020
