Confusion over Sri Lanka parliament re-starting date
ECONOMYNEXT – Some loyalists Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has contradicted his reported statement in the morning that President Maithripala Sirisena will reconvene parliament on Monday, sowing more confusion.
The media office of Speaker Karu Jayasuriya also issued a statement that President Sirisena had responded positively to a request to recall parliament early.
The speakers also said that he will not block officials of parliament from giving privileges due to a Prime Minister to Rajapaksa.
However several loyalists told the media late Thursday that parliament will be reconvened only on November 16.
Senior UPFA member Vasudeva Nanayakkara told private MTV channel that he expected parliament to be reconvened only on November 16.
Another MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage said Rajapaksa meant that there was only a possibility that he will be convened early. (Colombo/Nov01/2018)
