Couldn’t provide promised relief as vote on accounts limits govt expenditure-Dinesh
Leader of the House Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said the government has been unable to provide economic relief to the people as promised in their election manifesto as the vote on account has limited government expenditure till April 2020.
“A vote on account limits all expenditure within the parameters of the vote on account,” he told Parliament today, the second day of adjournment debate on the President’s policy statement.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa introduced tax concensions, said Gunawardena, to boost an ailing economy that saw only a 2.5 per cent growth rate.
The UNP government could have brought in a budget report, but since they had no self-confidence nor a vision, they couldn’t do it, he added.
The minister invited the opposition to join the government in rebuilding the country in accordance with the President’s policy statement. He urged members of the opposition to not engage in what he called bankrupt politics by accusing the government of not providing promised relief to the people.
