Court orders report on Swiss embassy staffer’s phone records
ECONOMYNEXT – Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne has ordered the Government Analyst to submit a report on the mobile phone records of Garnier Banister Francis, a staffer at the Swiss embassy in Sri Lanka.
Jayaratne also instructed the Analyst to keep the report confidential as it may contain sensitive material pertaining to the diplomatic matters being conducted by the Swiss Embassy.
Francis had claimed that she was abducted and forced to reveal information, triggering a diplomatic incident, while authorities had said there was no evidence to support the claim.
She was arrested and was released on bail.
The police Criminal Investigation Department had also reported to court that there was a group of police officers and journalists who had called Francis around the time.
The CID said that among those who called her and each other are the then head of the CID, Superintendent Shani Abeysekere, Inspector Nishantha Silva who later sought asylum in Switzerland, former Lake House Chairman Krishantha Cooray and journalist Dharisha Bastianz.
The last-named, the CID said used a SIM card registered in the name of Lakna Paranamanna, who had worked at theUS Embassy in Colombo. (Colombo/Jan22/2020)
