ECONOMYNEXT – Businessman Dhammika Perera was sworn in as a member of Sri Lanka’s Parliament by Speaker Mahinda Abeywardene.
Perera was nominated as a national list member by Sri Lanka Podujana Party of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa after ex-Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa resigned.
Perera resigned from the boards of several public companies before taking the appointment, but continues to hold stock.
Among the firms are companies like tile and sanitary ware which has received tax protection from the state to maintain high domestic prices for consumers.
Sri Lanka’s main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya and some opposition groups are boycotting parliamentary proceedings this week.
